Therese Martin was born at Alencon in France on 2nd January 1873 as the youngest daughter of the family. Her parents are blessed Marie-Azelie Guerin, a lace maker, and Louis Martin, a jeweler and watch maker. She was baptized Marie Francis Therese at the Noter Dame Church. Her mother died on 28th August 1877. Therese was barely 4½ years old. Her mother’s death dealt a severe blow. She wrote “when mummy died, my happy disposition changed”. Pauline, her sister took on the role of Therese’s mama. Therese was taught at home until she was 8½ years and then entered the school of Benedictine nuns. She was taught well by Marie and Pauline. Therese suffered very much of her sensitivity and she cried in silence.
